چکیده

Aging infrastructure in the US has gained quite a bit of attention in the past decade. Being one type of a critical infrastructure, embankment dams in the US require significant investment to upgrade the deteriorated parts. Due to limited budgets, understanding the behavior of structures over time through risk assessment is essential to prioritize dams. During the risk assessment for embankment dams, engineers utilize current and historical data from the design, construction, and operation phases of these structures. The challenge is that during risk assessment, various engineers from different disciplines (e.g., geotechnical, hydraulics) come together and how they would like to visualize the available data sets changes based on the disciplinespecific analyses they need to perform. The objective of this research study is to understand the discipline specific visualization needs of engineers from US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) who are involved in risk assessment of embankment dams when they deal with large set of data accumulated since the inception of dams. The requirements were identified through a three-phased research approach including interviews with engineers who are regularly involved in risk assessment processes, a card game and review of standards and published work on risk assessment of embankment dams. The findings suggest that visualization of the dam layout, components and geometry within 3D settings overlaid with sensor data (which could be queried based on engineers’ discipline specific needs) and data analytics results provide a better flexibility to engineers to understand the risk associated with potential failure modes.

Assessment of Slope Stability in Embankment Dams Using Artificial Neural Network (case Study: Zonouz

A slope formed when there is a height difference between two points of the ground surface. Limited or ambiguous data defined in the studying of the slip surface have always been posed as a challenge to engineers and geologists; however, previous studies presented the useful strategies for resolving this challenge. In general, Multi Layer Perceptrons (MLPs) (with three input, output and hidden l...

Fuzzy algorithm for estimating average breach widths of embankment dams

Dam breach width significantly influences peak breach outflow, inundation levels, and flood arrival time, but uncertainties inherent in the prediction of its value for embankment dams make its accurate estimation a challenging task in dam risk assessments. The key focus of this paper is to provide a fuzzy logic (FL) model for estimating the average breach width of embankment dams as an alternat...

Predicting Seismic Slope Displacements of Embankment Dams Using Fuzzy Systems

Iran, as a leading country in the dam construction industry, is located in one of the earthquake-prone regions of the world. Dams are important sources of hydroelectric power. Failure of these structures causes catastrophic damage. Therefore, evaluating the behavior of dams under seismic loading is an important issue. The present study focuses on the prediction of the slope displacements of emb...

PREDICTION OF SLOPE STABILITY STATE FOR CIRCULAR FAILURE: A HYBRID SUPPORT VECTOR MACHINE WITH HARMONY SEARCH ALGORITHM

The slope stability analysis is routinely performed by engineers to estimate the stability of river training works, road embankments, embankment dams, excavations and retaining walls. This paper presents a new approach to build a model for the prediction of slope stability state. The support vector machine (SVM) is a new machine learning method based on statistical learning theory, which can so...

Simple Design Criterion for Residual Energy on Embankment Dam Stepped Spillways

The stepped spillway design is associated with significant flow resistance and associated energy dissipation on the steps, yielding smaller, more economical downstream dissipation structures. A number of design guidelines were developed for steep stepped spillways typical of concrete gravity dams. The focus of this study is on embankment stepped spillways. A large set of air-water flow data is ...
